Equine Emergency Scenario Practice: Oconee County

This focused, one-day workshop provides essential practical training for Oconee County first responders, animal control and law enforcement to safely manage common equine emergencies. Participants will gain immediate response techniques and practice critical skills in a controlled environment.

Class participation is limited to 30 people. If we do not fill the class with fire & rescue, animal control, and law enforcement, then we will open the class to AAHC members. Oconee first responders have until Thursday April 30th to RSVP. RSVP below to be notified if there are any spots left.

Workshop Agenda Highlights:

• Equine Behavior and Handling: Classroom theory and hands-on practice in identifying scared vs. aggressive horses. Practice safe techniques for catching and loading loose horses.
• Barn Fire Drill: Simulation practicing “horse” extraction.
• Rescue Equipment: Practical training on safely applying donated straps and specialized rescue tools. Live animal practice may be facilitated with a well-trained horse for small groups.
• Classroom Theory: Overview of rescue equipment, equine behaviors (herd/prey animal + in crisis herd/prey animal), and human safety around horses. Includes discussion on animal welfare, abuse, and neglect.

Format: The workshop runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, consisting of one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on practice sessions, with a one-hour break for lunch.
